Reverse Geocoding Tool

Find a place from latitude and longitude

Enter a latitude and longitude and our free reverse geocoding tool finds the nearest known place, its administrative division and its country. The coordinates are also shown in UTM, MGRS and Plus Code, with both locations on a map.

Free reverse geocoding tool

Reverse geocoding turns a pair of coordinates into a meaningful location. Enter WGS84 latitude and longitude and the tool returns the nearest known place, its administrative division and country, together with the distance to that place.

Use it to identify where GPS readings, field measurements or points in a dataset are located. The service searches our geographic database for the nearest matching location, so it returns places rather than street addresses. To convert the same coordinates to other formats, use the coordinate converter.

Frequently asked questions

What is reverse geocoding?

Reverse geocoding turns a pair of coordinates (latitude and longitude) into a human-readable place, such as the nearest locality, region and country. It is the opposite of geocoding, which turns a place name into coordinates.

What does the tool return?

You get the nearest known location, its administrative division and country, the distance from your coordinates to that location, and the coordinates in several formats including UTM, MGRS and Plus Code.

Which coordinate format should I enter?

Enter latitude and longitude as decimal degrees (WGS84), for example 37.7749 and -122.4194. Latitude is between -90 and 90 and longitude between -180 and 180.

Does it return a street address?

No. The tool finds the nearest known place, division and country rather than a street address.

Can I use reverse geocoding in my own application?

Yes. Geocoding and reverse geocoding are available through our API.
